University of Szeged

University of Szeged

Our ancestor university was founded in Kolozsvár in 1872 and after the World War, in 1921, it was relocated in Szeged. On the first of January 2000, a new, albeit old university began operating in Szeged. The former universities and colleges were all united under the name of the University of Szeged. As a result by the turn of the millennium, the University of Szeged has become the largest university in Hungary outside the capital.
With 12 faculties, almost 30 thousand students and more than 7 thousand employees, our institution is covering almost the entire field of sciences and arts: natural sciences, law, economics, medicine, pharmacy, health sciences, teacher training, agriculture, food engineering, fine arts and music. We offer training on 5 levels, we have post secondary studies, bachelor and master degrees, PhD programs and postgraduate training.
The intellectual potential accumulated at the University of Szeged and the research conducted here have turned the institution not only into an important centre of Hungarian higher education but also a crucial actor of innovation in Hungary. The 19 doctoral schools and its internationally renowned research groups participate in high quality education as well as organize and conduct basic and applied research in various areas. An example to be followed by doctoral candidates and young researchers selected from among the best students, is that 17 of the ordinary members and 2 of the corresponding members of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) are teachers at the University of Szeged. The research workshops and knowledge centres of the university have a close relationship and cooperate with famous Hungarian and foreign partner organizations. As a result of the cooperation with the Academy 12 fully supported and 8 partly supported research groups in 4 faculties of the university enjoy the support of MTA.
Partnership in research also serving quality education and innovation are integral parts of the University of Szeged which in recent years has produced tangible results both in terms of joint efforts with businesses and cooperation with other actors of higher education. Thanks to partnership in research and innovation with various companies and organizations, the successes of scientific activity at the University of Szeged promote the attainment of practical, significant and remarkable results that will positively affect education as well.
